Building Blocks of Success
27 Nov 2018
Endeavour Education Centre learners have been applying themselves in a new project, aimed at improving construction skills. Thanks to a donation of materials from Sheffield Housing Company (SHC), including bricks and breeze blocks, our young people got to grips with the manual trade. SHC also helped organise a visit for our learners to attend a new build construction project, where learners were able to witness real-world applications of the trade.
Our partners WiCAT (Women in Construction Arts and Technology) were also able to support, using their practical expertise to deliver taster sessions. WiCAT’s experience in the trade was invaluable in helping our learners harness their skills.
Up next for our learners, will be applying these newfound skills in building a barbecue and clay pizza oven, as the project continues. After the taster sessions, we have full confidence that they will be more than capable in adapting their newly honed skills to successfully build the oven.
The learners have worked hard and really enjoyed themselves on the project. It is projects like this, offered at Endeavour, which truly have the potential not only to inspire, but to create an awareness of a world of future possibilities for young people.
Learning Mentor, Anita Redfern said of the project: “The initial sessions were fantastic and it was great to see enthusiastic young people engaging in a meaningful activity that was both fun and informative”. Anita added that it “could well provide the confidence our young people need to move forward with their learning and to maybe consider a career in construction in the future.”
