The Endeavour – Team Triathlon Challenge
25 May 2017
Last weekend saw our inaugural, flagship fundraising event, The Endeavour – Team Triathlon Challenge.
Nine teams were involved in the event, drawn from a variety of companies such as Irwin Mitchell, Shorts, Chesterfield Special Cylinders, Mitre Group, Sainsbury’s, members of The Firm Networking Group, and Endeavour staff and friends.
The 42 Participants rose early on a sunny Saturday morning in the Peak District, with a testing challenge ahead of them. They began with a 720m swim at Hathersage outdoor swimming pool, followed by a 21km cycle, and concluded with a 10km run. Despite steep gradients, and challenging distances, all teams exhibited stamina and dogged determination to complete the challenge.
The valiant participants were deservedly rewarded at the finish line with a generous donation of food paid for by Sainsbury’s and cooked to perfection by Endeavour volunteers.
Congratulations to the team from Sainsbury’s, Sheffield The Moor, who emerged victorious, going home with the first place trophy. Gliders, Striders and Riders followed closely in second place; they were also awarded The Lord Phillips Spirit of Endeavour Award, and raised the most money of all the teams, continuing to raise further funds well after the event had finished.
John McAvoy, a reformed armed robber, concluded the event with an engaging and inspiring speech. John left his life of crime behind him, and has since competed in various professional rowing races and has set seven indoor rowing world records. His story perfectly embodies the Endeavour values and the aims we strive to achieve; somebody who in the face of adversity has found a new lease of life.
The event raised over £6,000, which will be used to provide crucial support towards empowering disadvantaged young people.
The event organiser Graham Booth said “a huge thank you goes out to all the participants and volunteers who made this event such a success. We are grateful of the generosity shown by all the time, effort, and donations that have been made”.
We will be running The Endeavour – Team Triathlon Challenge again next year. Join our mailing list to keep updated.
